April 5, 1887 Anne makes the “miracle” breakthrough, teaching Helen that “everything had a name,” by spelling W-A-T-E-R into Helen’s hand as water from the family’s water pump flowed over Helen's other hand. May, 1888 Anne, Helen, and Kate Keller travel north, visiting Alexander Graham Bell, meeting President Grover Cleveland at the White House, and visiting Michael Anagnos at the Perkins Institute for the Blind. |

Summer, 1988 Helen and Anne stay the summer in Cape Cod, and Helen swims in the ocean for the first time. After being knocked down by a large wave, Anne pulls Helen from the water, and Helen asks, "Who put salt in the water?" |
