A picture of John Macy taken around 1900, just a couple of years before he met Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. He is rather distinguished-looking, wearing glasses, a neat tie, and stiff collar that stands straight up.

John Albert Macy, circa 1900

John Macy helped Helen with her autobiography, Helen Keller: The Story of My Life, while she was a junior at Radcliffe.  He worked for the Ladies Home Journal, and the first section of the book was printed as five articles in five months in that magazine.  He also helped Helen negotiate with the book publishing companies.  Doubleday published the book, and the book eventually became a bestseller.

Macy married Anne Sullivan in 1905, two years after Helen wrote her autobiography. In 1907, he wrote his first book, Edgar Allen Poe.
